The Museum is housed in one of the finest surviving Officers' mess buildings in Britain. Completed in 1867 it was originally built for the offices of the Royal Marine Artillery.
On the amalgamation of the Royal Marine Artillery and Royal Marine LIght Infantry in 1923 it became the Officers' Mess Portsmouth Division Royal Marines.
The Museum moved into the building in 1975, although it remained in use by the Royal Marines until 1991.
The refined architecture exudes its presence throughout the building, giving the Museum a unique ambience all of its own.
