THE LIBERATION OF WALCHEREN 1944
This on-line exhibition, produced by the Royal Marines Museum in collaboration with the Polderhuis Museum, highlights a relatively unknown but highly significant operation in World War Two. It draws on oral history testimony that was gathered for a complementary project titled "Memories to Share".
Operation Infatuate, a mere five months after the famous D-Day landings, was vital in ensuring smooth supply lines existed for the Allies to successfully continue their advance from Normandy towards Germany. In short, the Dutch island of Walcheren had to be captured so that Allied shipping could use the port of Antwerp.
